{"id":3110,"date":"2018-05-14T00:48:56","date_gmt":"2018-05-14T00:48:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nosmallthing.net\/main\/?p=3110"},"modified":"2021-05-08T14:37:28","modified_gmt":"2021-05-08T14:37:28","slug":"fifty-shades-green","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nosmallthing.net\/main\/fifty-shades-green\/","title":{"rendered":"Fifty Shades of Green"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nosmallthing.net\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/in-a-forest-greens.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3111\" src=\"https:\/\/nosmallthing.net\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/in-a-forest-greens-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nosmallthing.net\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/in-a-forest-greens-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/nosmallthing.net\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/in-a-forest-greens-768x574.jpg 768w, https:\/\/nosmallthing.net\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/in-a-forest-greens-1024x765.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/nosmallthing.net\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/in-a-forest-greens.jpg 1400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>I think that most people that live in a climate with four seasons have experienced this phenomenon.\u00a0 It reminds me of when, after Dorothy took her rough ride over the rainbow, in opening the door of her humble wooden house, she went from a monochromatic view of the world to TECHNICOLOR.<\/p>\n<p>This happened in my neighborhood this past week,\u00a0 The weather is not yet consistently warm, but, it seems that overnight everything became GREEN.<\/p>\n<p>Wow!<\/p>\n<p>A few blossoming trees have opened up too and there\u2019s a decidedly fresher scent in the air.\u00a0 I spotted a handful of brave (or foolish) people on the sidewalks wearing shorts, and I know that restaurant owners are chomping at the bit, ever eager to open their outdoor sections.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, I love the flood of green at this time of year.\u00a0 Just when it\u2019s easy to forgot what it looks like or smells like, or what walking on grass (the epitome of simple, beautiful green) feels like &#8212; it overwhelms my senses.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve thought about green a lot this week.<\/p>\n<p>It never went away. But my references for green are decidedly different between November and May than they\u2019ve been this week.<\/p>\n<p>During football season, there\u2019s Philadelphia Eagle or Green Bay Packer green\u00a0 Stores are decorated with pine green during December and shamrock green during March.<\/p>\n<p>Kids play soldier wearing camouflage green.\u00a0 They\u2019ll eat green M&amp;Ms or handle neon green clay or slime all year \u2018round.<\/p>\n<p>Shades of green are synonymous with the gem stone they resemble; emerald, jade, and malachite.<\/p>\n<p>Wine and beer bottles are often green.\u00a0 Flags of nations sport different shades of green that unmistakably are associated with that geography or ethnicity.\u00a0 I guess the shade of green of the Toronto public transportation system uses is as well-recognized locally as the paint job of the buses run by the Chicago Transit Authority here on the south shore of Lake Michigan.<\/p>\n<p>This week, I have been thinking about the greens of nature.\u00a0 <strong>There is not ONE green<\/strong>.\u00a0 There is an infinite number of shades and depths.\u00a0 The names we use to describe different shades of green often come from objects in nature.\u00a0 Each name makes us think about a unique mixture of light and tone; each a very particular green.<\/p>\n<p>Artichoke<\/p>\n<p>Asparagus<\/p>\n<p>Avacado,<\/p>\n<p>Fern<\/p>\n<p>Forest<\/p>\n<p>Jungle<\/p>\n<p>Mint<\/p>\n<p>Moss<\/p>\n<p>Myrtle<\/p>\n<p>Pistanchio<\/p>\n<p>Reseda<\/p>\n<p>Tea<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u2026and more<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s part of the beauty.\u00a0 The uniqueness of each shade, the variety, the range of difference between things that might be grouped together. From hunter green to laurel green to chartreuse &#8212;\u00a0 they\u2019re all different.\u00a0\u00a0 And ALL are <strong>green<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>When I take a moment to look at a patch of grass at my feet, I\u2019ll marvel at the blue or yellow undertones in what is essentially green. From the hostas that grow at the side of my building to the dandelion stems that seem to be everywhere,\u00a0 I can no longer simply say that my world has gone GREEN.<\/p>\n<p>Rather, it is teeming with <strong>GREENS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Celebrating the diversity of nature is no small thing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I think that most
