A few weeks ago, I encouraged people to make and share music playlists. I love listening to the Wood Brothers’ offering, “Sing AboutIt.” The lyrics (“If you get worried, what you ought to do is sing…”) seem especially important at this time. But some people don’t like the sound of their own voice. It’s important to learn how to cultivate the joy that is fundamental to making music even if your voice is not your chosen instrument. Children will pick up kazoos or use table tops as beat boxes. When I was a kid, we used to put waxed paper around a comb and blow against it, like a harmonica, until the vibrations tickled our faces. Find something in your home that you can make sound with. Or hum. Allow yourself to feel delighted by the spontaneity and physical sensations involved in making sound. Being delighted by something is a way of saying THANKS.
