Franz Schubert’s 8th Symphony is often referred to as his “Unfinished Symphony.” It consists of only two movements and was not “completed” even though he didn’t die for six more years. Theories as to why this piece was not “finished “ include his desire to integrate something different into the work. It’s a compelling idea that sometimes something we do exists in a state of incompletion because we want to keep open to a fresh idea. Can you think of anything you’ve worked on that you take pleasure from existing in a state of possibility? Are you grateful for accepting it in an unfinished state?
